The other ingredients of Truvía® Cane Sugar Blend, stevia leaf extract and erythritol, do not increase blood sugar. Studies conducted with stevia leaf extract and erythritol in people with diabetes have shown that these ingredients have little or no effect on blood sugar.

Truvía® Calorie-Free Sweetener and Carbohydrates

If you are closely counting the number of grams of carbohydrates in your diet, you should note that while the product label declares 3 grams of carbohydrate per serving, this carbohydrate is erythritol (a sugar alcohol), which is used as the carrier for the intensely sweet stevia leaf extract.

Unlike other sugar alcohols, erythritol cannot be used by the body to create glucose and hence, it has no effect on blood glucose levels following consumption. Therefore, the product label lists 3 grams of carbohydrate for erythritol, but a person who is closely monitoring carbohydrate intake should note that erythritol has a very low digestible energy value of 0.2 kcal/g.

Truvía® Sweetener and Pregnancy

Research has shown that Truvía® calorie-free sweetener is safe for expecting or nursing mothers when consumed as part of a healthful diet. Women who consume foods and beverages containing low-calorie sweeteners should talk to their doctor or RD about consuming the necessary calories and nutrients for their baby's growth.

Research Around Truvía® Stevia Leaf Extract

Cargill, maker of Truvía® stevia leaf extract and Truvía® calorie-free sweetener, and The Coca-Cola Company collaborated to develop a high purity stevia leaf extract. Before making its stevia leaf extract available to consumers, Cargill commissioned a rigorous set of scientific studies that established the safety of Truvía® stevia leaf extract — The Cargill Stevia Leaf Extract Safety Program.

The overarching objective of Cargill's safety program was to demonstrate the safety of Truvía® stevia leaf extract for consumption by all consumers, in all foods, for all eating occasions in all countries. Bringing together, assessing and documenting the basis for safety of fully characterized stevia leaf extract was a critical milestone in the development of Cargill's calorie-free sweetener, purified from the stevia leaf. It was also transparent. Twelve papers evaluating the safety of Cargill's stevia leaf extract have been published in the peer-reviewed scientific journal, Food and Chemical Toxicology.

In addition to Cargill's extensive research program, there have been a number of third party expert reviews confirming the safety of Truvía® stevia leaf extract, which include:

  • U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
  • European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)
  • Health Canada
  • Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA)
  • Food Standards Australia/New Zealand (FSANZ)
  • French Agency for Food, Environmental, and Occupational Health & Safety (AFFSA)
