Truvía® Health & Dietary Information

In light of the growing awareness of the serious health risks related to obesity, including diabetes, sensible eating and improved fitness are increasingly important to many patients. Truvía® calorie-free sweetener and Truvía® stevia leaf extract, which originate from the best-tasting part of the stevia leaf, provide sweetness with no calories and can play a useful role in a healthy balanced diet.

Truvia® Diabetes Safety & Nutritional Information

Truvía® calorie-free sweetener is a great alternative for people with diabetes to consider. Truvía® stevia leaf extract and erythritol have both been studied in short- and long-term clinical studies to evaluate safety for use by people with diabetes. Truvía® calorie-free sweetener has little or no effect on blood glucose or insulin. Studies have also shown that consumption of Truvía® calorie-free sweetener has no effect on the glycemic index.

While the product label declares grams of carbohydrate per serving, this carbohydrate is erythritol (a sugar alcohol) which is used as the carrier for the intensely sweet stevia leaf extract. Unlike other sugar alcohols, erythritol cannot be used by the body to create glucose and hence, it has no effect on blood glucose levels following consumption. Therefore, the product label lists grams of carbohydrate for erythritol, but a person who is closely monitoring carbohydrate intake should note that erythritol has a very low digestible energy value of 0.2 kcal/g.

Truvía® Cane Sugar Blend and Diabetes

Truvía® Cane Sugar Blend contains 1 gram of sugar per 12 teaspoon. The amount of Truvía® Cane Sugar Blend used in your patients' recipes and the amount of sugar it provides to a serving of their recipe should be considered as they manage their blood sugar. For example, a cup of sugar has about 190 grams of usable carbohydrate. An equal amount of sweetness from Truvía® Cane Sugar Blend (12 cup) contains about 47 grams of sugar or usable carbohydrate.

The other ingredients of Truvía® Cane Sugar Blend, stevia leaf extract and erythritol, do not increase blood sugar. Studies conducted with stevia leaf extract and erythritol in people with diabetes have shown that these ingredients have little or no effect on blood sugar.

Truvía® Stevia Leaf Extract side effects on blood glucose levels in people with diabetes

A study conducted with purified stevia leaf extract does not have any immediate effects on blood sugar (glucose) or insulin in people with diabetes in doses as high as 1000 mg, or the amount contained in 35 packets of Truvía®calorie-free sweetener. There was no difference in side effects reported by those consuming Truvía® stevia leaf extract as compared to those consuming the placebo. This study was presented to the public at a scientific meeting in April 2009.

Side effect study of Truvía® Stevia Leaf Extract on people with type 2 diabetes

Chronic consumption of purified stevia leaf extract had no effects on blood sugar (glucose), insulin, hemoglobin A1c, blood lipids such as cholesterol and triglycerides in subjects with type 2 diabetes in a randomized, masked study. This study followed 122 subjects consuming 1000 mg of stevia leaf extract (amount contained in 35 packets of Truvía® calorie-free sweetener) or placebo every day for 4 months. There were no differences in side effects reported by those consuming stevia leaf extract as compared to those consuming the placebo. The study was conducted with Truvía® stevia leaf extract.
