Creamy Tomato Basil Soup made with Truvia® Calorie-Free Sweetener

This creamy Tomato Basil Soup recipe is the perfect warm-up for a chilly day. With a touch of fresh basil, garlic and Truvia® Calorie-Free Sweetener, this delicious version of a classic recipe has 22% fewer calories and 47% less sugar* than the full sugar version. Makes 6 servings.

  • 28-ounce (828 mL) crushed tomatoes 

  • 6-ounce (177 mL) tomato paste

  • 1 cup (240 mL) water 

  • 2 Tbsp (30mL) fresh basil, washed and minced

  • 2 Tbsp (30 mL) Truvia® Calorie-Free Sweetener

  • 1 Tbsp (15 mL) garlic powder

  • 1 Tbsp (15 mL) onion powder

  • ½ tsp salt (3 mL) + ¼ tsp (2 mL) salt

  • ½ tsp (3 mL) black pepper

  • 1 ¼ cup (300 mL) half and half


  1. In a large saucepan, add crushed tomatoes, tomato paste and water. 

  2. Bring to a boil. 

  3. Stir in the basil, Truvia® Calorie-Free Sweetener, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper

  4. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 40 minutes.

  5. Remove from the heat.

  6. Cool slightly, carefully use hand blender or blender to make smooth

  7. Stir in half and half.

  8. Season with an additional ¼  tsp salt.

  9. Mix well.

  10. Return to the heat to warm and serve. 

  11. Refrigerate all leftovers.

*Each serving has 140 calories and 12 grams of sugar per serving, compared to the full-sugar version that has and 180 calories and 23 grams of sugar per serving.
